A New Cover for Big Pete (and a Few Words About AI)

Old and new covers of Big Pete, book three of Privateer Tales, side by side

Confession time. I've never loved the cover on Big Pete, book three of Privateer Tales. So today I jumped into one of the AI art tools to see if I could do better. I think it came out great. The new cover is already live on Amazon if you want to see it in the wild.

For those who think AI is simply bad, I'll have to disagree. For a book this old, I can't afford to pay an artist to redo the cover. The economics just aren't there. It's probably time for me to wade in and talk about the use of AI in the publishing business, because there's a lot of misinformation out there.

Until that post is ready, let me get to the bottom line. Authors of good reputation do not use AI to write their stories. That's my personal opinion. Writing is fun. Why ruin that with technology? AI prose is getting better and better, but it just doesn't have heart.

If you haven't read Big Pete yet, it's a standalone story in the Privateer Tales series, so you can jump in without reading the others. Read it on Amazon. It also has a companion short story, Pete, Popeye and Olive, which is free when you subscribe to my newsletter.
